The CMS hospital conditions of participation (CoPs) on radiology and nuclear medicine have been rewritten, effective July 10, 2015. Every hospital that accepts Medicare or Medicaid must be in compliance with these regulations and interpretive guidelines. This session will discuss the risks of ionizing radiation, increased patient exposure, and safety precautions to decrease radiation exposure, including staff training, care of high-risk patients, appropriate shielding, and equipment review and calibration. Also, Sue Dill Calloway will review the FDA initiative to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure, diagnostic and therapeutic radiology and standards, standards of care, and the order of nuclear medicine tests. Additionally, she will cover the CMS MRI requirements.
