As the need for inpatient care is changing and more coordination of outpatient care is occurring in the emergency department (ED), access to relevant, accurate and reliable data is becoming even more critical to designing efficient operations. With up to 80-90% of inpatient/observation patients arriving through the ED, the presence of hospitalists in the ED is more frequently the norm. Knowing when patients arrive, how acutely ill they are, and trends in diagnostic testing and care delivery can help ensure resources are available to drive throughput.
