Texting and Mobile Devices for Practitioners and Patient Communications: Getting the Most From New Technology Within the Limits of HIPAA, TCPA and TJC
The use of mobile devices and texting services is pervasive in today’s society, and healthcare practitioners need to be prepared to make sound decisions when considering how to use mobile devices for various purposes, including staff personal business use, normal business use not involving any PHI, business or professional use involving PHI and communications with patients for a wide variety of reasons. Diverse communication uses are subject to different rules, including the rules of HIPAA, Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and Joint Commission (TJC) rules. Mr. Dean will discuss the requirements, risks, and issues of the increasing use of mobile devices and texting for patient and provider communications and provide a road map for how to use them safely and effectively, to increase the quality of health care and patient satisfaction. In addition, the session will discuss how to be prepared for the eventuality that there is a breach, so that compliance can be assured.
