CMS has been creating hospital overall ratings, commonly referred to as “star” ratings since 2016. The purpose of the ratings is to provide a simple consumer-friendly way for patients and their families to compare quality across hospitals. The overall rating is a composite of hospital-reported and CMS-calculated measures included on Hospital Compare.
