Course Curriculum
This program will cover the hospital radiology and nuclear medicine standards and requirements for hospitals from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Every hospital that accepts Medicare or Medicaid must comply with these regulations and interpretive guidelines.
CMS regulations and guidelines address the risks of patient exposure to radiation, which has doubled in the last 20 years. The amount of ionizing radiation from a CT scan is significantly greater and patients may receive several over their lifetime, hence why the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has taken initiatives to reduce unnecessary radiation exposure. CMS also discusses safety precautions a hospital should take to decrease radiation exposure.
This webinar will also cover the MRI requirements, and this program will help hospitals understand all the radiology and nuclear medicine conditions of participation to help prevent receiving a deficiency.
Finally, there will be a discussion of the Conditions of Participation (CoPs) for Critical Access Hospitals (CAHs). CAHs have similar requirements for meeting the CoPs, but the requirements are based on the scope of services offered for patients.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
• Recall that CMS rewrote the radiology and nuclear medicine provisions in the hospital CoP manual.
• Explain the policies and procedures required for radiology by CMS.
• Describe that the hospital must have diagnostic radiology services that meet standards of care and standards of practice.
• Recite what safety precautions must be in place for imaging services.
