Course Curriculum

This program will show how hospitals can ensure compliance with the Joint
Commission (TJC) sentinel event policy changes. TJC’s patient safety system chapter
will also be reviewed. The patient safety system chapter informs and educates
hospitals about the importance of an integrated patient safety system. Though the
chapter does not include new requirements, it does describe how current standards
can be used to improve patient safety. The chapter also provides the direct link and
framework between the accreditation standards and patient safety. The patient
safety system chapter and the sentinel event policy are designed to be used
together. The CMS hospital QAPI worksheet that discusses patient safety, adverse
events, and medical errors will also be addressed in this webinar.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:
• Discuss TJC patient safety system chapter’s aim to help hospitals improve
quality of care and patient safety.
• Describe the Joint Commission sentinel event policy.
• Recall that CMS has a final worksheet on QAPI that includes a section on
patient safety, adverse events, and medical errors.
